Fully Custom Audio for Sinister Charger Hellcat

When a client rolls into our shop with a stunning deep-red Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat wearing custom racing stripes and a New York plate that reads “SLEPRCAT,” you already know two things: they appreciate extreme performance, and they don’t do anything halfway. With 707 supercharged horsepower on tap, the factory exhaust note is already legendary. But our client wanted a sound system inside the vehicle that could completely match its thunderous presence on the outside.

The mission for this build was clear: create a premium, high-output audio system that delivers crystal-clear imaging and massive, hard-hitting bass—all while preserving functional trunk space and executing a flawless, show-quality cosmetic integration. To achieve this, our fabrication team engineered a bespoke trunk layout utilizing premium JL Audio components, wrapped in hand-stitched, diamond-quilted leather that perfectly echoes the Hellcat’s aggressive luxury DNA.

The Open-Air Advantage: JL Audio Marine Subwoofers

One of the most unique and strategic decisions made during the engineering phase of this build was our choice of low-frequency drivers. Instead of standard automotive subwoofers, we selected a pair of JL Audio Marine Subwoofers loaded into a custom-engineered enclosure built flush against the rear seat wall.

Why marine subwoofers in a 200-mph muscle car? The answer lies in their specific electro-acoustic design. Marine subwoofers are engineered from the ground up to excel in highly demanding, open-air and infinite-baffle environments where traditional enclosed cabin reinforcement isn’t always present. When the trunk lid is popped open at a car show, standard car subwoofers often lose their acoustic loading and drop off drastically in bass efficiency.

These JL Audio marine units thrive in these exact conditions. Featuring robust synthetic polymer baskets, injection-molded mica-filled polypropylene cone bodies, and precisely engineered suspension geometries, they deliver highly linear, tight, and punchy bass whether the trunk is completely sealed or wide open to the public. To tie it all into the vehicle’s theme, we integrated dynamic red LED illumination into the driver surrounds, creating a sinister glow that perfectly mimics the Hellcat’s instrument cluster.

Clean Power: JL Audio XD Series Amplification

To drive the subwoofers and upgraded cabin speakers with absolute precision, we required amplification that was compact, highly efficient, and completely uncompromised in sound quality. We turned exclusively to the JL Audio XD Series Amplifiers.

We laid out a symmetrical, four-amplifier configuration beautifully flushed directly into the floor of the trunk. The XD series utilizes JL Audio’s proprietary NexD™ high-speed switching technology. This allows the amplifiers to deliver massive amounts of clean RMS power while generating minimal heat and drawing significantly less current from the Charger’s charging system—a critical factor given the complex electrical architecture of modern SRT vehicles.

Each amplifier is nested into a custom acrylic and leather-trimmed floor utility panel. The top heatsinks are exposed for natural convection cooling, while all wiring, distribution blocks, and fused connections are hidden entirely underneath the false floor for a clean, concours-ready finish.

The Art of Custom Fabrication

A high-end audio build is only as good as its execution. Our fabrication department spent hours scanning the factory trunk dimensions to build an environment that looked factory-optional yet strikingly custom. The vertical sub enclosure seamlessly flows into the factory carpeted wheel wells.

The centerpiece is the diamond-quilted upholstery work. The black leatherette panels with red diamond contrast stitching wrap around the enclosure border and completely cover the amplifier floorboard. This theme directly complements the Hellcat’s premium interior styling cues. When the custom trunk accent lighting turns on, the red glow accentuates every single stitch line, drawing your eyes straight to the craftsmanship.

Final Tuning & Sonic Performance

With the physical installation complete, we utilized our in-house digital real-time acoustic analyzers to tune the system. The crossover points were meticulously configured to blend the marine subwoofers beautifully with the front stage imaging.

The results are spectacular. The low-end extensions are incredibly fast and authoritative, catching rapid double-bass drum strikes with precision, while easily sustaining the deepest digital synth notes. More importantly, when the trunk is opened, the sound stage stays focused, clear, and immensely loud—exactly what a beast like this Hellcat deserves.
